The City of Fulton faces challenges with Wal-Mart looming in neighboring town

The City of Fulton sits between Syracuse, NY and Oswego, NY and is a small town comparatively. One upcoming challenge that Fulton will face is the proposed Wal-Mart store going into the town of Granby, NY. Fulton's downtown is made up of small businesses that provide the needs of citizens and if something isn't available it's a close drive to either Syracuse or Oswego. I needed some home repair items so I made the short drive to Home Depot which was 12.5 miles away which isn't a very far drive compared to what we're use to in Tulsa.

When the Wal-Mart is built in Granby, it's bound to put a stress on both Fulton's sales tax collections as well as adversely affect small businesses. Granby is a town which is smaller than the City of Fulton, but has somehow lured Wal-Mart into building a box store there. Unfortunately the town of Granby doesn't seem willing to work with Fulton and I'm sure this situation might get nasty before the last semi with "Made in China" goods arrives to stock the shelves.

You can read the Mayor of Fulton's take on all this and more by going to the Fulton Daily News website and reading the article titled "Half-Way Point." I find it interesting and refreshing that the Mayor works with the City Council. Citizens in Tulsa need to make that a prerequisite in the upcoming elections!
