The Delphi Technique or Method
The following post begins a multi-post series. Although I know there is a start and a finish to this series, I'm not sure how many entries will be posted between the start and finish. Indulge me for a moment, if I don't get to the "real" topic immediately.
What is Delphi? If you are like me, you thought when anyone mentioned Delphi they were talking about the Corporation who had something to do with automotive parts. Delphi was created when GM spun off most of its part-making operations in 1999. Visteon was formed when Ford spun off its parts factories in 2000. Recently Delphi Corp. has been in the news when the company declared bankruptcy.
I'm not talking about that Delphi Corp. in this series. The Delphi that I'm going to tell you about today goes back a long long time. The word Delphi refers to the hallowed site of the most revered oracle in ancient Greece. The oracle of Delphi in Greece was the telephone psychic of ancient times. People came from all over Europe to call on the Pythia at Mount Parnassus to have their questions about the future answered. Her answers could determine when farmers planted their fields or when an empire declared war. The Pythia, a role filled by different women from about 1400 B.C. to A.D. 381, was the medium through which the god Apollo spoke.
The Pythia would appear to be a powerful woman if her answers could influence when an empire declared war.
Technique - The systematic procedure by which a complex or scientific task is accomplished.
Method - A means or manner of procedure, especially a regular and systematic way of accomplishing something.
Pretty archaic stuff and you're probably wondering to yourself; "Why should I be concerned about the Delphi Technique?" Stay tuned to Tulsa Topics to find out why!
