Pictures From A Parking Lot

Pre-excursion checklist:

  • Popcorn (freshly popped at home).

  • Fold out chairs.

  • Cooler w/ soda and water.

  • Boombox.

  • Camera.

  • Stop at Quiktrip for money and a couple of hotdogs.
After completing the above items, my wife and I drove to our destination. Upon arrival we pick our place carefully avoiding parking behind the family schooners that may block our view. We find the perfect place in the parking lot and begin the ritual of setting up our foldout chairs, tuning the radio and waiting for the sun to set.

Unlike our recent trip to Rocky Mountain Nat'l Park, we're not waiting for a glimpse of the area's wildlife, although there is abundant wildlife of the two legged variety that is playing soccer in front near the big white monolith. We're waiting for the showing of "Cars" at the Admiral Twin Drive-in.

After reading about "Cars" from the Route 66 News blog since October 2005, I thought catching the movie at a Route 66 attraction was appropriate. We arrived early and there was a hefty line of cars waiting to get in to the Admiral Twin. The box office attendant told us to make sure we only took up one spot since they were expecting a large crowd for Saturday night's showing of "Cars."

I enjoyed the movie and the many references to Route 66. Even though I'm not a Route 66 aficionado, I have lived near and traveled on Route 66 most of my adult life. My wife is from Upstate NY so she doesn't really identify with the Route 66 nostalgia movement. Of course she didn't like Mexican food either when she first moved to Tulsa but now it is one of her favorites.

Here's a few pics of the venue: (Note: click on the picture for larger versions)
